Alonso extends F1 career with new Aston Martin deal

Fernando Alonso has extended his Formula 1 career into a 25th season with Aston Martin confirming its driver line-up will be unchanged in 2027.

The 2005 and 2006 world champion will turn 46 next year, but has committed to at least another season with Aston Martin despite the team’s difficulties this season. Alonso will once again partner Lance Stroll – himself entering an 11th season in F1 – and says the challenges of 2026 have not shaken his belief that the team can succeed.

“I'm very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team,” Alonso said. “I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.

“I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”

Stroll’s extension was more of a formality, given his previous comments that he wanted to remain with the team, combined with his familial ties. The Canadian has three podiums and one pole position to his name in his F1 career to date, and suggests his latest contract extends beyond next year.

“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term,” Stroll said. “I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.

“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me. I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”

Between them, Alonso and Stroll are the most experienced line-up in F1, and executive chairman Lawrence Stroll says that stability and knowledge is an important pillar as the team looks to improve on a tough start to the latest set of regulations.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team,” Stroll Sr said. “Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.

“We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives.”

The confirmation ends American reserve driver Jak Crawford’s hopes of a promotion in 2027, with his plans for next season yet to be confirmed.
